Letting go of fosters is hard to do... but worth it

I fostered Lilly and Buddy.  They were a bonded duo that found themselves homeless when their owner passed.  BUT how I found them was word of mouth when someone I knew mentioned the pair and said they were only going to take one.  I explained that at their age, there is a bond and breaking that bond could be detrimental to their well being.  But the process to split them was already in progress...

So she put me in contact with the finders.  They explained that Buddy was not doing well alone and was breaking down in the boarding/kennel facility he was in.  Lilly was already staying with someone and on her way to another person.  After hours of phone calls, convincing to re-unite them... it finally happened and this pair was on their way to me!  They were so scared, so shut down, their worlds were just upside down.  We had a lot of adjusting to do.  They learned to live with my 3 dogs, learned to play, and showed me they loved dancing for treats.  Because they were bonded, they were with me for a year.  I was just about to accept they would just always be with me but then they day came, an adoption application was waiting for them.  My heart sank.  Was this a good family? Would they keep them together? Would they love them like I do?  Then we met and it was just a natural fit.  I cried to let them go but I was so happy they were going to have a place to call home.  I keep in touch with the family and get regular updates and I love that.  I think about them often, miss them dearly and sure, it was a heart ache... but I learned letting go is hard but if I don't do it, who will?  These two could have been separated, they were not.  One may have never made it out of the shelter, but he did.  When they left my home, it opened space for another.  When the next group left my home, a new group arrived.  And another, and another and another...
